Born in Birmingham, England on 19th February
1943 and lived in Handsworth Wood,
Birmingham until the early 1960s
In my early years my father took me to two
locations; Pendine Sands and
Snitterfield Airfield.
. What I experienced there has had a continuing impact upon my life.
I was first employed by the GPO (now called BT for younger
readers), the "highlights" included working on the
WB400 Nuclear attack warning
system and communications equipment for the UK Regional seats of government.
In 1964 I started working on computers with ICT
(International
Computers and Tabulators),
first as a hardware engineer on ICT 1301 computers. (If the very
mention of printer sprags, hardware sterling multiplication,
Ampex 1" tape drives......bring tears to your eyes please
contact me). Following the 1301, I then worked on 1904 and 1907 mainframes.
In 1969 I joined General Electric to work on GE600 mainframes, we
were in turn taken over by Honeywell then Bull,
and then finally Steria in April
2002. In the 1970
to 1990s I specialised in the hardware and software of various Front End Processors. (Datanet 30, Datanet 355, Datanet 18X,
GERTS,
GERTS2, DNS...). I was involved a bit on the United States
Military system
WWMCCS, as well as the ill fated SCOMP based
Trawlerman Project for the Defence Intelligence Staff
|
I retired from Steria at
the end of March 2003,
my last role was in a training capacity,
working on various products which include TCP/IP Networking, Unix
networking, Windows NT, Citrix
, Lotus Notes and bespoke software (for various UK government departments
including the MoD).
One of the subjects that I used to lecture on was Web page construction,
but as I decided to aim for a fast simple site, so have resisted
the temptation to add too much Java, JavaScript, animated gifs and other
methods of adding spice to web pages.. |
I enjoy reading, painting and foreign
travel, so I resent the
amount of time that I wasted in traffic jams on London's North
Circular Road when I worked in Brentford. I was also a member of
Mensa after taking a series of tests in 1993.
I now live in Market Harborough,
Leicestershire, England with my wife
Lesley who has
put up with me since our marriage in 1969. Lesley is the family historian, I
just play with computers.
