WELCOME to Market Harborough’s Civic Society web site. The society was founded in 1961 as a result of interest in the new Civic Trust movement by local Rotarians, who formed the first Steering Committee. It is entirely independent with members drawn from Market Harborough and the surrounding districts.
AIMS The aims of the Society are to promote high standards of planning and architecture; to educate the public in the geography, history and natural history of Market Harborough; to seek the preservation, protection, development and improvement of features of historic or public interest in the town.
WHAT WE DO These aims are backed up by a full programme of monthly talks for our members that run from September to April. In addition to the general committee there is a Planning Committee, which operates with the support of Harborough District Council Planning Department, in lieu of a Town Council. The Market Harborough Civic Society Planning Committee meets monthly to review and comment on planning applications received by Harborough District Council.
JOIN US If you are interested in our society, why not come along to one of our meetings and find out more about us? If you would like to become a member, application forms are available at meetings or can be downloaded from this website.
CIVIC VOICE Market Harborough Civic Society supports Civic Voice, the national co-ordinator of local civic societies.
