The decisive battle of the English Civil War was fought at Naseby on 14th June 1645, some six miles from Harborough. Our tapestry shows the opponents facing away from each other! The Royalists were in the town before the battle, King Charles is believed to have held a Council of War here. After his victory, Oliver Cromwell wrote his famous letter to Parliament telling them of the battle and its outcome, from the Bell Inn.
