Since 1987 the town has held this event,
usually on the first Friday in December, and for the last two years of
the 20th Century, the whole of the High Street has been closed to
traffic with the shops staying open until 9.00pm.The Square is filled
with charity stalls and there are competitions and raffles. There are
many bands and entertainments as well as Father Christmas and rides for
the children. It is a wonderful start to the Christmas season with real
trees decorated with lights suspended on many of the buildings and the
special lights in Church Street adding to the atmosphere. Open
Harborough sometimes happens in spring or early autumn. Once again there
are charity stalls, rides, bands and competitions. The Morris dancers
appear at both events and the old Grammar School is decorated with
flowers. Both occasions have a terrific feel of community spirit and
draw thousands of visitors.
