Morecote, Morecotte, Morecott and Murcott of Warwickshire
The first related Morecott (that I have found to date) was a Henry Morecott who died in 1507 in Leamington Priors ( now known as Leamington Spa ). Henry had a son also called Henry . Henry (II) also called his son Henry . Henry (III) Morecott lived in Tachebrook Mallory, Warwickshire, and in 1573 a son, William, was born. In the will of Henry Murcott (1573) he gave 12d (5p) to all the poor inhabitants of Tachebrook Mallory (his definition of poor was not owning a plough ) . Also the poor of Whitnashe were given a donation . His eldest son, John, inherited the majority of the estate (farm house , another house , barns , stables , building land , arable land , meadows.....).
In the 16th century there are also links to another prominent Cubbington family, the Commanders .
William Morecott first lived in Bishops Tachebrook but died in Cubbington, Warwickshire in 1631 . In 1579 William Murcott married a Margaret Savage. A son, William, was born in 1635 who married Elizabeth Greswold in 1681 . In 1736 William Murcott and his wife Elizabeth had a son, Henry , who in turn was father to Lydia who married Joseph Muddiman in 1827
The Murcott family was prominent in Cubbington from the 16th to 19th century and there are many memorial plaques and windows in St Mary's, Cubbington . An interesting cartouche is the wooden commemoration to Captain Abraham Murcott who was drowned off the Scilly Isles in 1703.
The Murcott family are also distantly related to William Shakespeare . A Joan Murcot married a Richard Lane (some time before 1600). Richard Lane's brother, John Lane, was the father of Margaret Lane who married John Greene, son of Thomas Greene 'cousin' of William Shakespeare.
Dugdales "History of Warwickshire" (published about 1630) describes a "Morecote Hall" dated back to the time of Henry the second. Here a Hamon de Morecote was a witness to Nigel be Amundevills grant to the Canons of Kenilworth. Hamon was succeeded by Alan de Morecote whose son and heir John was stiled (sic) Johannes de Warwick or Johannes de Morecote. Johannes owned a third of Radway (Radway is in the south east corner of Warwickshire on the Banbury road). John was followed by Walter de Morecotte (one of the four coroners of Warwick). His daughter Margaret then married a William Wade of Northampton. Sadly I have found no link between the above and "my Murcotts"
