Greswolds of Solihull Warwickshire

Elizabeth Greswold who married William Murcott in 1686 was part of the Cubbington branch of the Warwickshire Greswolds, the most prominent being the Greswolds of Solihull. A chart in "Solihull and its Church" by R.Pemberton published in 1905. "Cubbington" written by C.F.Peppitt in 1971 confirms that the Cubbinton Greswolds were a junior branch of the Solihull family.

The earliest Greswold (Grissold) that I can find in Cubbington is an Elizabeth Grissold who married an Edmundus Johnson 3rd. Oct 1613.  Dugdales "Warwickshire" published in 1630 records "In Allesey Church there is a monument to the Greswolds who came from Greet in the County of Worcestershire.

The Greswolds have been resident in Solihull since the 13th Century and numerous houses have been occupied by them since then. They include: The "Manor House" on Solihull High Street. This never has been a Manor house but was probably the first seat of the Greswolds in Solihull. The house next door was built by Richard Greswold in 1571 and his initials appear over the porch (along with those of Thomas Harbourne who was churchwarden in 1845). Olton Hall Solihull, this was owned by Henry Greswold Lewis in the 18th century. Hillfield Hall owned by Mrs Ann Greswold in 1756. Malvern Hall owned by Humphery Greswold (died 1712) who was the High Sheriff of Warwickshire.
