The Victorian Diary of Thomas Henry Milsom |
4th March 1890 Scotland Today is the official opening of the Forth Rail Bridge: Even to an undertakers eye, this bridge will never last. This has been built without any ornamental ironwork on any of the piers and to such a low standard that a team of painters will be permanently occupied in a vain attempt to stop it rusting away. I would recommend that any sane person should buy up the rights to run the ferry across the river and sit back and wait for the obvious conclusion to this folly.
